BPD implements use of cruise lights on patrol vehicles

August 12, 2024

You may have recently noticed some BPD vehicles illuminated with solid red and blue lights. These are cruise lights. They are low-intensity, steady-burning lights designed to increase the visibility of police vehicles, deter crime, and enhance community safety. Officers recently began using cruise lights while patrolling downtown, and will now use them for patrols throughout the city.

Cruise lights do not signify an emergency. Officers will use standard flashing lights and sirens during traffic stops or while responding to emergencies. The video below demonstrates the difference between emergency lights and cruise lights.

The purpose of cruise lights is simple: to let our community know that our officers are actively present, ensuring your safety and security.

  • The SUV is using cruise lights.

  • The pickup demonstrates emergency lights.
