The Bradenton City Council met this morning to approve a resolution that allows the City to use emergency operating guidelines outlined in the City’s Emergency Management Plan. This proactive measure is in response to the potential threat posed by Tropical Storm Helene. This declaration is in addition to the local state of emergency currently in effect from Hurricane Debby. City officials are actively monitoring the situation and preparing for any possible impacts.
In anticipation of the storm, sandbags are being made available to city residents at the Public Works Annex today from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Residents are instructed to use 9 th St. W. to access the distribution area behind the Annex, located at 1411 9th St. W. Signage will be in place. Sandbag distribution is limited to 10 bags per car, and a valid ID demonstrating City residency is required.
Additionally, all City government offices will be closed on Thursday, September 26, 2024, due to the anticipated tropical weather conditions. Updates on additional closures and reopening will be provided based on weather and roadway conditions. Solid Waste collection services will also be suspended starting Thursday due to the closure of the county landfill and impending weather. Updates will be shared as they become available.
Residents are encouraged to sign up for CodeRED, the City’s emergency notification system, which is available at no cost. Enrollment can be completed online at www.cityofbradenton.com/codered, or by texting MyBradentonFL to 99411 from your smartphone.
Mayor Gene Brown stressed the importance of preparedness, stating, “As we prepare for Tropical Storm Helene, it’s vital that residents review their emergency plans, know their evacuation zones, and stay informed. The City is taking proactive steps, and we urge everyone to do the same. Together, we can weather this storm safely by staying informed and prepared.”
