Gas station argument ends with man hospitalized, another in jail

A fight in a gas station parking lot overnight sent one man to the hospital and another to the Manatee County jail.   

On January 22, 2025, at 7:36 p.m., officers responded to a disturbance at the Marathon gas station in the 2000 block of 14th St. W. Witnesses reported that a customer, later identified as Peter Sampson, ran over another customer with his vehicle. Witnesses said Sampson and the victim, who arrived separately, got into an argument inside the store and continued to fight in the parking lot. Sampson retrieved a hatchet from his car and threatened the victim. He then got into his vehicle and hit the victim before driving away.  

The victim suffered injuries that included a broken leg. 

Using investigative means, the Bradenton Police Department Crime Reduction Team identified the driver as Sampson, 51. Sampson was arrested January 23, and charged with:  

  • Aggravated battery with a deadly weapon 

  • Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon 

  • Leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury 

The investigation is ongoing.
