Bradenton Police continue to target pedestrian and bicycle safety

January 31, 2023

The Bradenton Police Department is expanding previously announced patrols aimed at decreasing crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists.

In July, the Department received funding for the Florida Department of Transportation High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) Program, aimed at improving safety by educating motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians on Florida’s traffic laws. At that time, additional enforcement was added along 8th Ave. W., between 12st St. W. and 14th St. W.

February 1, 2023, three additional locations will be added for education and enforcement activity.

  • 14th St. W., between 9th Ave. W. and 21st Ave. W.

  • 1st St. W/US-41, between 9th Ave. W. and the CSX railroad.

  • Manatee Ave. W. between 35th St. W and 43rd St. W.

These operations will continue through May 12, 2023.

Special attention is directed towards increasing awareness of the dangerous behaviors that contribute to serious and fatal injuries. This includes drivers speeding, failing to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, conducting improper turns or signal violations, and using hand-held devices while driving; pedestrians who cross the street illegally or fail to yield to motorists who have right-of-way; and bicyclists who ride against traffic, ride at night without lights, or fail to abide by the same laws as motor vehicles.

This is an education campaign, designed to decrease crashes, injuries, and fatalities. Warnings and citations are issued only when appropriate.
