Uptick in Kia, Hyundai thefts reported in Bradenton
December 23, 2024
We're sharing the video below as a warning to owners of Kia and Hyundai vehicles. The teenagers in the video were driving stolen cars, and attempting to steal a third vehicle. BPD arrested four teenagers in connection with the stolen cars and attempted motor vehicle theft.
BPD has seen an uptick in Kia and Hyundai thefts or attempted thefts. Since August, there have been 12 thefts, and 14 attempted thefts, of Kias and Hyundais.
10 Kia thefts; 10 attempted thefts
2 Hyundai thefts; 4 attempted thefts
These cars are targeted because they don't have an immobilizer, an anti-theft device that prevents it from starting when someone tries to use a key that doesn't match the car. If you own a Kia or Hyundai, here's what you need to know:
2011-2021 Kias are at risk. Some owners are eligible for an anti-theft software upgrade and/or steering-wheel locks. More information: customercare.kiausa.com/SWLD
2015-2021 Hyundais are at risk. Hyundai offers a free anti-theft software upgrade. Learn more: hyundaiantitheft.com/#eligibility
We encourage ALL drivers to park in well-lit areas and, if possible, near security cameras. Always lock your vehicle and never leave valuables or guns in your car.
